This unique, 2 or 3 day, evidence-based course is designed for paediatric or adult diabetes teams, to help them meet national (eg NICE, Best Practice Tariff, Diabetes UK) and international (eg ISPAD) recommendations for structured and self management education provision for children, young people and adults.

The 3 day course is ideally suited to participation from more than one team in a locality, so as to learn with and from each other and support each other in implementing local developments in diabetes self management education (DSME), as well as being cost-effective.

The 2 day course is designed for a single team who wish to dedicate time together for this purpose. In this case it is ideal if most or all members of the team can attend together.

Course Structure and Methods

Participants are invited to complete a pre-course reflection on their current provision and identify the areas most in need of development. Then, teams attend 2 or 3 face-to-face days (day 3 is a half day), with days 2 and 3 separated by 6 weeks and 3-4 months, respectively.

In between the face-to-face days, participants are invited to undertake team coursework to implement their learning.  The course is formally evaluated in terms of structure, process and content

The course is presented using learner-centred methods, modelling educational best practice and creating an enjoyable, interactive environment for learning and team support.

Course Content

The course content covers:

*Requirements and recommendations for DSME

*Writing and communicating a team education philosophy

*Practical learning about key aspects of education programmes, including writing learning outcomes, designing and planning a curriculum, age related learning development (where relevant) and quality assurance

*Teaching skills development including group education and facilitation skills, using varied teaching methods and evaluation techniques.

*Team goal setting and action planning for local development of programmes and provision

Course Support

The course is supported by a dedicated website, containing pre course preparation, materials and guidance for team coursework and a comprehensive reference section. Participants will continue to have access to the website after the course.

Books to support DD DSME and the Course

Two of our books have been particularly useful for teams undertaking this course and we recommend them for this purpose. These are 'Group Education and Facilitation Skills in Healthcare Settings' and 'Providing Structured Diabetes Education for Children and YOung People'. They are available to anyone not undertaking the course as well!

Complimentary Book Included!

A complimentary copy of one of these books is included for each workshop participant or participating team. This means extra resources for putting your learning into practice and key references always close to hand!

Course Costs

One 3-day course for up to 24 participants in the UK, inclusive of facilitator costs and travel is £3250, subject to our usual terms and conditions

The 2-day course costs £2250 as above
